Urbanitis Part 1: What Excuses Do You Hide Behind?
Each day at Hedgehog I have the privilege of speaking to customers and prospects who are trackers, survivalists, and outdoorsmen from all over the United States. I am continually inspired when I hear about your many adventures that are happening in wilderness locations from coast to coast, and without fail, every time I hang up the phone I long to be out there too. Even now, as I am typing at the computer, there is a restlessness that overcomes my entire body and I hear a nagging voice in my mind that wants me to return to the forest.

Chances are you know this feeling too, or at least you have experienced it to some degree. I call it "urbanitis", and the only known cure is to get far away from the city, other people, and anything else that gives you a clue as to what century this is. You won't find "urbanitis" in any sort of medical text book, but I can guarantee you it is responsible for most of my insanity… and probably yours too. The most dangerous thing about "urbanitis" is that when it goes untreated, you forget you have it… and then you wake up one day counting the number of months it has been since your last spontaneous quest into the woods.

Of course we all have responsibilities to our families, jobs, businesses, and the list goes on and on. Many of us could list a thousand very good reasons why we have not been able to make it to the woods lately, and just like you, I have some extremely convincing ones. The simple fact is that 99% of those reasons are actually excuses. We invent them in order to spare ourselves the effort it takes to break the routine and get off our asses. I have recently become more aware of my excuses for not getting out there more, and am no longer allowing myself to hide behind them. I encourage you to do the same if you are also a victim of "urbanitis". I promise there is nothing easy about reprioritizing your life and making time, but in the end you will be asking yourself why you didn't do it sooner.

I plan to revisit this topic in a series of short articles over the next several months. You will also find pictures and articles from my personal outings being posted here frequently. I look forward to sharing more of my thoughts and adventures with you in 2008 and growing our skills together.
  Best always,
Paul Scheiter
